In May 2020 we were treated to the release of not one, but FOUR new Theragun Smart Percussive Therapy™ devices (also known as massage guns) – the Theragun PRO, Elite, Prime and Mini. The company has also rebranded as Therabody, now selling a range of fitness and health products including the TheraOne CBD range. For anyone who wanted one of the renowned 2019 Theragun G3PRO massage guns, it’s now priced at $150 off (while stocks last). If you take a closer look at the Theragun PRO vs G3PRO though you’ll find that there are some nice upgrades to the 2020 version that you’ll definitely want to take into consideration.

What is the Theragun PRO?
The Theragun PRO is Therabody’s latest “professional grade” percussive therapy device to come on the market. Although the company has rebranded, the massage guns are retaining their well known “Theragun” name. The Theragun PRO (the top rated high end massage gun) is the most expensive and “top of the range” product of its kind on the market, so due to the price it’s not for everyone. Like its predecessor though (the G3PRO), it’s likely to remain a top seller among professional users (like physiotherapists and chiropractors), sportspeople, athletes and sports teams.
Main differences between the Theragun PRO and G3PRO
New quieter motor
One complaint that people had about the Theragun G3PRO was that even though it was quieter than previous models, it was still quite loud. That’s not great if you want to use it in a public place, like at the gym. The PRO brings us a new QX150 Motor with QuietForce Technology™, a commercial-grade brushless motor that is as quiet as a standard electric toothbrush. It now sounds the same as most average massage guns on the market (a LOT quieter than its predecessor), but still retains the same above-average power.
Bluetooth Connectivity and App
This is what makes the new 4th generation line of Theragun’s the most advanced on the market. This is something the previous models didn’t have – Smart app integration with Bluetooth. The Therabody app is available in the App Store and Play Store and can be used to personalize your wellness routines and customize speed. The feedback you get will show you which areas of the body to focus on, the speeds you should use, and how much pressure to apply. There are even some app guided preset routines built into the new PRO and you can save new favorite routines to your device. The app works with all the 2020 4th gen models (so you don’t have to opt for the most expensive just to get the bluetooth functionality).
2 extra speeds
The top speed of 2400 RPM is the same for both, but there are now 5 speeds instead of just 3. This is probably to address the fact that some people actually found the Theragun’s massage power TOO intense. Now you can dial it down further for a more relaxing and less intense massage (we’re not all bodybuilders covered in dense muscle!) The speed range is also customizable using the app.
Longer battery life
One thing we love about the Theragun is that you get two interchangeable batteries instead of just one built-in battery (like most other massage guns). Of course, it’s a luxury rather than a necessity, but it’s a great way to save on downtime. You can always have a charged battery waiting to be used! This is particularly good if more than one person will be using the massager because you can literally have it on the go all day long.
Each of the G3PRO’s batteries had about 75 minutes of charge – not bad, but not the longest either. The 2020 Theragun PRO has 2 x 150 minute batteries. That’s a huge 5 hours of continuous usage.
There was just a 1 year limited warranty for the G3PRO, but the new PRO comes with an industry-leading 2 year limited warranty. As always, you should read the terms and conditions of any warranty before you buy, just so that you know what’s actually covered. It won’t be everything!
Theragun G3PRO versus new 2020 PRO – what’s still the same?
The main similarity is the power. They both have an amplitude of 16mm (that’s the depth the massage gun “travels” into the muscles). This is one of the deepest amplitude’s available as the average tends to be about 12mm.
At 60lbs the stall force is also the same. Stall force is how much force you can exert with your massage gun without it stalling or cutting out on you. Cheaper devices will often have a much lower stall force which makes them less powerful.
The top speed is the same – 2400 RPM. As we mentioned above though there are 5 speeds with the new PRO version instead of just 3.
So all in all, you could say that the power is exactly the same in both. We didn’t really expect any upgrade in power though because the G3PRO was already up there as one of the most powerful massagers on the market. Some might say it’s almost “too” powerful as it’s capable of a really deep, intense massage. It’s already at an optimum level for any human body of any muscle density so that really can’t be bettered.
Theragun PRO vs G3PRO – Our final verdict (Which one?)
Now that we’ve compared the Theragun G3Pro vs PRO you probably already have an idea which one you’d prefer. We’ll sum it up here:
If you’re happy just to have a powerful, durable massage gun and you’re not that interested in the extra “bells and whistles” like Bluetooth and an app, then just get yourself the older G3PRO while it’s still available. There’s $150 off right now which is a significant saving. It does just as good a job at massage as the newer PRO. Either model will work equally well to enhance muscle recovery, soothe and relieve muscle pain, and release stress and tension.

The Theragun PRO, however, does have its advantages. Longer battery life (twice as long), a quieter motor, customizable speeds and a longer warranty are all pluses. The main selling point I think though for the new Theragun range is that they’re “smart”. Nearly everything comes with Bluetooth connectivity and an app these days, and Therabody is the first to bring us this line of “Smart Percussive Therapy™ devices. If you love your technology then you’ll probably enjoy the app-controlled guided routines built into your massager. Also, its ability to analyze data and create personalized routines will help you to get the most effective and efficient use of your device.
Whether or not you think the PRO’s extra features are worth the price is up to yourself. As I’m sure you’re aware, this is by far one of the most expensive massage guns on the market. Also, there probably won’t be any sales or price reductions until at least Black Friday. If you can afford it though, we think it’s a powerful, durable investment that should bring you years of recovery and relief from muscle pain.
