In recent years we’ve been treated to a vast array of massage devices to help with pain relief and recovery after exercise (reducing stiffness and sore muscles). Percussion massagers are one of the most popular of these having been used by many professional athletes and sports teams (but also by ordinary fitness enthusiasts). In this Hypervolt review we’re going to take a look at one of the most popular of these – a brand that needs no introduction. Hypervolt by Hyperice is consistently one of the highest-rated and best-known massagers on the market right now. But is it just popular due to clever marketing, or is it really one of the best products of its kind? Let’s find out…
What is Hypervolt and how does it work?
Hypervolt is a handheld, lightweight massage device that utilizes advanced percussion mechanism to ease muscle soreness and stiffness. Percussion therapy works by boosting blood flow to a given part of your body, disintegrating muscle knots, and releasing muscle tension to make you feel better. Whether you are a professional weight lifter or an exercise enthusiast, use Hypervolt before a workout to energize you and post workout to foster recovery. The device offers three speed levels with the highest setting providing 3200 percussions per minute. This way, you can vary the speed to ensure you get a massage at a comfortable percussive pace. If you are new to the device, start with the lowest speed setting before moving on to the other two levels.
Who is it for?
Percussion massagers are not so much for a comfortable, relaxing massage. They’re designed to promote healing and recovery for the muscles. If you’ve ever used a foam roller after a workout think about how it feels, or a deep tissue massage from a sports massage therapist – they can be pretty sore, right? Actually a percussion massager is A LOT less sore to use because of how it works (sending vibrations deep into the affected muscles), but it’s not a fun, relaxing massage either!
This is something that will increase blood flow, improve your range of motion, reduce the pain of sore muscles, relieve tightness and can be used to treat trigger points and knots using self myofascial release. It’s not just for professional athletes and sports people like you might imagine – many fitness enthusiasts, gym goers, runners and amateur athletes use this massage gun or similar.
Maybe you’re not an exerciser at all but still need some help with muscular or soft tissue problems? Again, this massager can help. A lot of people working in sedentary jobs need something quick and easy to use to improve muscle tone and release tightness. A handheld massager fits the bill for many.
The following are some of the features of this massage gun:
Quiet Glide Technology
When compared to other handheld massagers, Hypervolt operates quietly to prevent distracting other people at work or waking up your loved one. It utilizes Hyperice’s quiet glide technology that was invented in collaboration with aerospace experts to provide variability and high performance while producing minimal noise.
Hypervolt comes with an included rechargeable battery. When fully charged, you can use the massager for up to 3 hours. Charging time is quite long and it takes up to 6 hours to reach a full charge.
The product is TSA approved, so you can carry it on a flight. It’s also designed to be light and compact despite its power. It weighs below 3lbs, making it a lightweight product to carry on a trip or to work. Carry it in your backpack or a sizeable handbag and relieve muscular soreness whenever need be.
About the design, the Hyperice Hypervolt is an elegant piece of gear available in a black and greyish color combo. It has a comfortable, soft grip to reduce fatigue and discomfort. It is a cordless tool, so you do not have to deal with any wires running across the floor. The company provides you with a sound dampening handle, which you comfortably hold even when using the highest speed setting.
Hypervolt Instructions – How to use it
You should follow the manufacturer’s guidelines on how to use the Hypervolt properly and to get the best benefits from it. As mentioned earlier, Hypervolt can be used to target different muscle groups, be it your quads, calves, feet, calves, or forearms. For instance, if you need to massage your quads, move the tool vertically, beginning below the hip to above your kneecap. If it is your calves, sit first and move the Hypervolt from the top of the calf to above your achilles.
There are plenty of videos available to users of this product on Youtube. Here’s one that shows you how to use it for your arms and shoulders:
Hypervolt head attachments
To massage different parts of your body, you will need different Hypervolt attachments. For example, to work on your feet, use the fork attachment to point out areas of soreness. The Hypervolt applicator set includes a fork, bullet, round ball, flat, and cushion head.
The cushion head is a foam attachment perfect for sensitive areas while the bullet assists you in identifying problem spots then releasing trigger points. The flat covers smaller areas and is excellent for dense muscle areas.
Here’s a quick video showing how to change the head attachments and which to use for your situation:
- Runs more quietly than many of its competitors
- Easy to operate
- Light and portable for daily on-the-go use (carrying it to the gym etc)
- Offers variable speeds
- Utilizes advanced percussion tech
- Has a cordless design with an eye-catching look
- It’s not the cheapest massage gun on the market (although it’s far from the most expensive). You can check out the price on Amazon here.
Hypervolt vs Theragun – How does it compare?
These are two of the most popular brands on the market right now, so a lot of people like to know the differences between the two before they choose. Unlike Hyperice Hypervolt that uses an L-shaped design, Theragun utilizes a triangular grip that is easier to hold. However, Hypervolt scores highly when it comes to quiet operation; Theragun is significantly louder.
Nonetheless, Theragun comes with two lithium-ion batteries, which you can use interchangeably, unlike Hypervolt that has an integrated cell. Theragun’s battery life is 75 minutes while Hypervolt offers up to 3 hours of use when fully charged.
With regard to warranty, Theragun offers two years while Hypervolt has a 1-year warranty. On the plus side, though, Theragun provides six interchangeable foam heads while Hypervolt offers four head attachments. With a maximum speed of 3200 percussions per minute (and 2 speed settings), Hypervolt beats Theragun’s 2400 and has three settings.
They’re both popular products with some of the best technology available but which is better? Hypervolt vs Theragun – it all comes down to personal preference. Although the Hypervolt offers a faster vibrating speed, the Theragun is said to give a deeper, more aggressive massage with more overall power. This won’t be for everyone. Also the Hypervolt is significantly more affordable if budget is an issue.
Hyperice Hypervolt vs Hypervolt Plus – Which model is better?
Hypervolt Plus has all the admirable features that the Hypervolt incorporates but provides an additional 30% power. It is light, cordless, but has a brush-less, high torque 90W motor and costs $100 more. The Hypervolt model utilizes a 60W motor.
Is the Plus version worth the extra money? They’re really almost exactly the same product except the Plus is slightly more powerful. For most people, the Hypervolt will be more than sufficient. However, if used for more serious conditions like deep muscle knots the extra intensity of vibration might be welcome.
Where to Buy
You can purchase the Hypervolt massager on the official Hyperice store or on Amazon.com. There are other retailers that sell it, but you do need to be careful where you buy. There are cheap imitation products available that aren’t authentic and won’t give the same results (or be the same high quality).
Verdict – Is the Hyperice Hypervolt worth it?
This is a solid buy and good investment in your muscle health, something that we could all benefit from. User reviews are overwhelmingly positive (check some out on Amazon) and although there are many similar options on the market, the Hypervolt is a brand we trust and recommend.
Whether you’re an exercise fan or not, you’ll probably find a handheld massager like this beneficial. It certainly beats cheaper alternatives like foam rolling for results. And because you can use it to massage yourself, any time, anywhere, it’s also preferable to getting regular professional massages. Therapists can be very expensive!
With regard to the price, it’s mid range (not the cheapest) but is reasonable considering it’s a high end product from a top brand. Hyperice are one of the leading manufacturers of recovery and movement enhancement technology today. So you know that you’re getting a product that will work and be high quality. The benefits of a percussion massager are huge so even if the Hypervolt isn’t within your price range, you may decide to save up for one (or check out a cheaper alternative).
